Massage Monday 7-25-11: Shoulder circle side position

Massage can be done in various positions. It can be done sitting, laying face up or face down. Today I will introduce you to a side position where the receiver is laying on a side.

First have the receiver lay on a side with the bottom leg straight and the top leg bent 90 degrees at the hip and the knee. You can use pillows or rolled up towels for the head and the knee to make it more comfortable for the receiver.

Sit right next the receiver’s back with your knees by the receiver’s shoulder. Grab the shoulder by putting your arm under the receiver’s arm. Let’s loosen up the shoulders. Circle in one direction then circle in the other direction the same number of times. I’m sitting Japanese style but it can be hard on your legs. You can try different ways by kneeling on one knee or sitting Indian style with your legs in front of you. Everyone’s size and flexibility is different so please find the one that best fits you and your partner.

Next week I’ll show you how to stretch the receiver’s neck and shoulder in this position. It’s going to be a good one so please check back next week.

Happy Massaging!
