How to be a good massage giver

It’s the season for gift giving. It takes two to make the massage giving experience great. This week I’ll share how to be a good massage giver.

1. Give what the receiver wants – not what you think the receiver wants or needs. Clear your mind and listen to what the receiver wants and give it to them (within the boundaries of course).
2. Create a safe environment for the receiver – Honor the receiver’s boundaries and always create a safe space for the receiver to relax and be able to speak up if they want a specific location, strength, speed, etc. and adjust accordingly, because you want to give what the receiver wants. Without creating a safe space for them to communicate, how would you know what they want so you can give it to them? Also, do not tickle the receiver. Once you tickle the receiver they will be on their guard and will not enjoy your massage.
3. Put your heart in every single stroke – touch is a very powerful communication tool and your thoughts and feelings can transfer. I tell my clients think of at least one thing you love or appreciate about the person you are touching. Technique is one thing but I believe it has to come with a heart to make it great. So even if you know just few techniques, put your heart in every single stroke as you think of what you love about the person you are massaging.

To re-cap on how to be a good massage giver, give what the receiver wants, create a safe environment for the receiver, and put your heart in every single stroke. Next week I’ll share how to be a good massage receiver.

Happy Massaging!
