Benefits of Humming and Humming for Peace 10/10/2020 (Massage Monday #519)

Did you know there are benefits to humming? I certainly didn’t know. This week I will tell you many benefits of humming and a special event coming up on October 10th called Humming for Peace.

Do you hum when you are taking a shower or may be taking a walk? It turns out humming is way more than just a self-soothing sound and it has quite a few health benefits. Humming is one of the simplest and yet most profound sound that we can make. Research shows humming reduces stress, induces calmness, enhances sleep, lowers heart rate and blood pressure, produces oxytocin, aka “love” hormone. In brain imaging study, the “om” chant that ends in a humming sound reduced activity in certain areas of the brain associated with depression.

In addition to that, humming improves the airflow between the nasal cavities and sinuses. Compared to a regular nasal breathing, humming creates 15-20 times more nitric oxide in your paranasal cavities. Nitric Oxide or NO is known to be antifungal, antiviral, and antibacterial so it improves your immune system. Your first defense. It also dilates blood vessels so you have more oxygen intake.

So humming is good for your health and it’s a good mood enhancer. If you think about it you tend to hum when you are in a good mood. You don’t hum when you are mad, right? If humming makes you happier, consider humming your favorite tune when you are mad to shift your mood. I tried it and at least I shifted my focus from something that was bugging me to my favorite song and my head was full of it because when you hum it resonates inside your head and it felt like it was filling the space.

With that said, there is a special event coming up on October 10th at 10am Japan time. It is called Humming for Peace and we will be humming together for world peace.

Humming for Peace

It’s started by my dear friend Yukie Kakubari. Her nickname is Yukkie. It’s an online event to bring people together beyond the borders through humming which doesn’t require language. It is based on her vision that she once saw where people of different colors were holding hands and humming together praying for world peace.

Peace has a dual-meaning of the world peace and also the “piece” as in jigsaw puzzle that has the same pronunciation because every one of you is an essential piece of puzzle in this world.

This event is part of the World Space Week that’s going on right now from October 4-10. It’s an annual event designated by the United Nations to celebrate the science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition. This year’s theme is Celebrating Satellites. Imagine being a satellite looking at the earth. It’s just one blue planet with no borders written on it. Humming for Peace fits right in with the international celebration of humanity.

This will be the first year of many more years to come. You can participate by joining us live, submit your voice, observe, or just by supporting the idea by going to this Facebook Event Page and please click on the Interested or Going button. That would be very encouraging. Originally it was only going to be in Japanese but I’m supporting with the English page.

For those who can record and submit your humming voice, she will be compiling all the humming voices and release the compiled version on November 1st, 2020 on the event website. All the instructions will be updated on the same Facebook Event Page.

It will be Saturday, October 10, 2020 at 10am Japan time. We will have the time zone converter so you can figure out what time that will be in your area. But I think you will see your local time on this page. Today, I will end with the event video with subtitles in English, Spanish, Korean, and Chinese.

Happy Humming!
