Per my friend’s request this week I’m going to show the acupressure points to help you wake up. I’m going to cover two different situations.
The first situation is when you are alone or maybe driving and drowsiness hits. You can press these two points.
GV 20 – The first point is on the top of the head in the center. Draw the lines from the top of the ears and it’s where the lines meet. This is called GV 20 or Governing Vessel 20. You should feel a distinct sensation when you press this point.
GV 26 – The second point is under the nose. To be exact, it’s one third of the way down from the nose and two thirds of the way up from the upper lip in the philtrum. This is called GV 26.
Press these points until your drowsiness is gone. Since these points are on the center line it’s easy to press with one hand while you’re driving. For me personally top of the head works better. One day I was fighting the after lunch drowsiness in the Shiatsu class. When we learned this point and pressed it I was so awake and alert and that’s how I learned the effectiveness of this point.
The second situation is when you are in a meeting or class and you can’t easily press the head or under the nose in front of someone. These points are on your hands so you can press them discreetly.
P9 – The first point is on the middle finger on the index finger side right above the first joint. Few millimeters below the base of the nail. This point is called Pericardium 9. You can press this point with hooked thumb and index finger and pinch it kind of hard. This is an interesting point because this point will help you wake up when you have drowsiness and also it helps you have a good night sleep when you have a trouble sleeping.
LI 4 – The second point is in the web between the thumb and index finger. Close your thumb and it’s at the end of the crease. This is called Large Intestine 4. You can press it with a hooked thumb or back of a pen against the index finger bone. Again you should feel a very distinct sensation. You can press these points on both sides.
I hope these points will help you wake up when necessary.
Happy Massaging!
